What do real users say about each matrimony site?

Every big matrimony site scores between 4.0 and 4.6 on the app stores and between 1.0 and 1.9 on Trustpilot and MouthShut, and both numbers are true. App-store ratings come mostly from Indian users of the free app; Trustpilot and MouthShut reviews come mostly from people who paid, many abroad. A 4-star app rating next to a 1-star review-site rating usually means the product works and the sales process does not. The independents that score well in both places are the ones with named staff and small pools.

The independents that score well in both places are the ones with named staff and small pools: Chavara and Nest in Kerala, Patidar Vivah in Gujarat, Nithra in Tamil Nadu. Reddit adds two practical tips the review sites do not: upload clear photos before judging any site, and do not let a parent or sibling run the account.

What the complaints have in common

  • The before-and-after-payment cliff. The single most repeated story across Shaadi.com, the whole BharatMatrimony family, Jeevansathi, Sangam, Nikah.com, NikahForever, M4Marry, Nest and Betterhalf: many interests and polite daily calls before you pay, then silence and unreachable support after. Reddit's kinder explanation is that most members are free and cannot reply, so the paying member is talking into a room where nobody can answer. Either way, expect the flow of interest to drop after payment, not rise.
  • One side must pay to talk. On every large family site a free member cannot read or send a message or see a number. Jeevansathi is the exception, with free chat after both sides accept, which is why Reddit rates it best for free matches.
  • Sales calls before, silence after. Daily calls from many numbers until payment, including Sundays, on almost every platform. The Reddit tip from r/hyderabad and r/ArrangedMarriage is to wait for the 60 to 85 percent discount call and pay through customer care rather than in the app.
  • Auto-renewal without fresh consent. Explicit complaints on BharatMatrimony, KeralaMatrimony (no email, SMS or call before the deduction), DivorceeMatrimony, Jeevansathi and Muzz. Pay by a method that cannot auto-debit, or switch autopay off on the day you buy.
  • Refunds with conditions. Shaadi.com's 30-day money-back advertising was enjoined by the Madras High Court in January 2025 because the conditions were not disclosed. TamilMatrimony and BengaliMatrimony reviewers say the 15-day refunds have conditions that block them. Betterhalf, PunjabiMatrimony and Jodii reviewers report no refund route at all.
  • No-photo profiles. TeluguMatrimony reviewers put profiles without photos at 70 percent, MuslimMatrimony reviewers at 90 percent, Shaadi.com App Store reviewers at 60 percent of women's profiles. Photo privacy is a feature parents ask for, and it feeds the "fake profile" feeling.
  • The assisted tier draws the angriest reviews on every platform. VIP Shaadi, BharatMatrimony's assisted service (KeralaMatrimony reviewers: Rs 18,000 to 20,000 for two profiles), ABP Weddings' packages up to Rs 1.5 lakh and Jeevansathi's Rs 70,000 to 1.25 lakh plans. The exceptions are the Kerala services where staff are praised by name, and even there "communication stops after payment" appears.

Official actions on record

  • Shaadi.com: Madras High Court interim injunction against its "30 day money back guarantee" ads after ASCI upheld complaints (January 2025); a Faridabad consumer commission compensation order (2021, appeal withdrawn 2023).
  • KeralaMatrimony (Matrimony.com): Ernakulam consumer commission held it deficient in service over a Rs 4,100 package and ordered a refund plus Rs 25,000 compensation (June 2024).
  • Jodii (Matrimony.com): Madras High Court permanent injunction against the "Jodii" name as deceptively similar to Jodi365 (August 2026); the app now appears as BharatJodii.
  • MatrimonialsIndia: Trustpilot has withheld its score and removed fake reviews (seen September 2026).
  • No order was found against Jeevansathi, Aisle or any of the regional independents in consumer-commission or court searches.

If a complaint pattern here worries you, the five things to check before you pay are the practical defence, and the scams page covers the cases that go beyond bad service.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Shaadi.com have a 1.2 rating on Trustpilot?

Trustpilot reviewers are mostly paying members, many abroad, and their complaints cluster around profiles that go quiet after payment, VIP package upselling, refund refusals and repeated sales calls. The same app is rated 4.4 on Google Play by about 4.8 lakh mostly free users. BharatMatrimony (1.4) and Jeevansathi (1.9) have similar Trustpilot scores with the same themes.

Is Shaadi.com genuine?

Yes, as a company: People Interactive has run Shaadi.com from Mumbai since 1997 and the app is rated 4.4 by about 4.8 lakh Google Play users. Its 1.2 on Trustpilot is about sales practice, not fraud: paid members complain of interest that dries up after payment, sales calls, auto-renewal and refund conditions, which the Madras High Court made it print in its ads in 2025. The fraud risk sits with individual profiles on every platform, and a verified badge proves a phone number and a face, not a job, an income or a marital status. Use the checklist in the scams section before any money or documents change hands.

How do I find genuine profiles and avoid fake ones?

Filter by profiles that are ID-verified and recently active, keep early conversations inside the platform, insist on a long unscheduled video call and a call with the parents on a number you found yourself, verify the employer through LinkedIn and the company website, and treat any request for money, gifts, customs duty or an investment as the end of the conversation.
